NavSafe Marine

About Us

Navsafe Marine is a registered, Queensland-based proprietary limited company. We have well-established, professional working relationships with many boat builders and state authorities in Australia and have also worked in China, New Zealand, Fiji and Nigeria.

Since 2001, we have conducted over 1000 pre-purchase inspections. Our company does pre-purchase inspection, insurance inspection, commercial ship inspection reports, valuations, damage assessment and compliances, new construction inspections, infrared imaging, sound metre readings, ultrasonic thickness testing, swamp tests on vessels less than six metres in length, safety equipment inspections and is accredited to issue Statements of Positive Floatation. Find out more about our services and we’ll also answer your question – why do I need a survey or surveyor?

Navsafe Marine is a Queensland Government, Queensland Transport, Maritime Safety Queensland Accredited Marine Surveyor (AMS/337). All surveyors employed by us are trained and encouraged to become Accredited Marine Surveyors in their own right.

Our surveyors and our company are audited by the Queensland Government on a regular basis to ensure compliance and high standards are maintained.

The auditing process applies mainly to the commercial vessel sector; however, we apply these same high standards to all recreational ships we inspect.

At present, recreational craft marine surveying in Australia is unregulated. Therefore anyone with a marine background can claim to be a “Marine Surveyor”. You should also be aware, there are many “Marine Surveyors” claiming to be “Accredited Marine Surveyors” even though they do not necessarily hold any type of recognised accreditation in Australia.

There are several marine industry organisations offering accreditation. These include AIMS (Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors), IIMS (International Institute of Marine Surveyors), the MSA (Marine Surveyors Association Inc) and SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors). Each has their own application process and requires the applicant to prove an acceptable level of competence relevant to the type of vessel before “Accreditation” or membership is granted.

The Director of Navsafe Marine, Toby Blundell, is the current President of the MSA and is a Class 1A Accredited Marine Surveyor (No: 206) within the Marine Surveyors Association. He is also a financial member of AIMS.

Toby Blundell, is a qualified boat builder by trade. He completed his apprenticeship at Norman R. Wright and Sons at Bulimba on the Brisbane River (at the old shed) in 1989 and has remained in the marine industry. Toby oversees all Navsafe Marine’s inspections and he is fastidious with detail which helps ensure high-level reporting is maintained.

Lisa Blundell coordinates the office, accounts and general day-to-day operations. Toby and Lisa are supported by a network of qualified, marine engineers, yacht riggers, electricians and sub-contractors.

We do not hold accreditation in electrical or ship design; however, we utilise the services of qualified electricians and accredited electrical marine surveyors and ship designers as required. This ensures, no matter what we do, everything will meet the specified commercial standards and commercial vessel compliance as required.
