CSD-RISE System Description

RISE is the fire resistant sealing system of choice for cable and pipe penetrations. Fast and simple to install with its smart system design and extremely limited number of component parts.

RISE multi-cable transits consist of only two components

  • Rubber sleeves & strips
  • FIWA sealant

The rubber sleeves have been developed for the RISE system. Exposed to fire or high temperatures, this rubber will expand to five times its original volume. During the expansion a carbonised mass is formed, which has good thermal insulation properties. The RISE rubber is absolutely halogen free and has a low smoke and a very high oxygen index.

FIWA is a fire-resistant and water repellent sealant based on a single component silicone compound. In the event of fire or at high temperatures the sealant expands to about 10 times its original volume.

The porous mass that is formed has excellent thermal insulation properties. FIWA is absolutely halogen free and has a low smoke index, a high oxygen index and low flame spread characteristics.

The RISE system can be used for single metallic and plastic pipe penetrations. The RISE penetrations have been especially developed for those cases where the ducted pipe is off-centre in the conduit sleeve, so that sealing plugs cannot be used.

The RISE system is very easy to install. Use is made of rubber filler sleeves and rubber sheets that expand to 5 respectively 10 times its original volume when exposed to fire. On both sides of the penetration a layer of FIWA sealant is applied.

The RISE system is a self-correcting sealing system that follows displacements of the pipe and deformation of the deck/bulkhead in case of a fire. The limited number of components make the system easy to handle on site.

CSD-RISE Dynatite High-pressure plug seal
CSD-RISE Dynatite High-pressure plug seal

The DYNATITE system has been specifically designed for application in columns of offshore oil rigs, where penetrations may be subjected to sudden extreme pressure loads. The system is also suitable for use in a wide range of other environments where penetrations may be suddenly exposed to extreme conditions. These include for example partitions between hazardous and non-hazardous areas, blast walls, explosion-proof areas, and regions with elevated hurricane and tsunami risks.

The DYNATITE system consists of plugs which are made of a special polymer rubber compound. The plugs are provided with a special profile designed to enable the desired deformation to be achieved under pressure loading. As a result of this profile together with the compound used ensures that the plug will return to its original shape even after being subjected to severe shock pressure loads.

The DYNATITE plug fits exactly inside DYNATITE conduits, and once installed the plug flange lies flush with the front side of the conduit sleeve or module. A specially designed retainer ring is positioned in the conduit opening in order to secure the compressed rubber mass tightly under pressure loading. The use of modified retainer parts enables pressure loads at both sides of the conduit sleeve or module to be absorbed and also allows extreme displacements of the structure to take place. To assure fire safe performance, conduit openings should be sealed at each end by means of a DYNATITE plug.

In spite of the fact that this new system by Beele Engineering is extremely simple to install, the DYNATITE plug is capable of withstanding pressure loads in excess of 10 bar.

CSD-RISE Multi Pipe Transits
CSD-RISE Multi Pipe Transits

The RISE system can be used for multi metallic and plastic pipe penetrations. Only a minimum of distance between the sleeve and the ducted pipes is required to guarantee fire safety.

Assembly of RISE multi-pipe penetrations is a simple job. A limited number of components are used for the sealing of the conduit. Rubber strips cut from rubber sheets are applied for wrapping fire-safe material around the ducted pipes. Only two types of filler sleeves are used to fill the empty space in the conduit opening. The sealing is finished by applying a layer of FIWA putty at each side of the conduit.

For pipe sizes up to 44 mm insert sleeves are available in a length of 80 mm with the required wall thickness of 10 mm as an alternative for wrapping the strips around these pipes.

With RISE no pre-engineering is needed, no special conduit frames have to be used, a minimum number of components is needed, there are no restrictions on pipe types and sizes ánd the system is capable of withstanding mechanical loads.

CSD-RISE Multi Cable Transit

Cables can be ducted through the conduit opening in a random order. After ducting the cables, a RISE insert sleeve is applied around each cable. The remaining free space in the conduit is then filled with RISE empty sleeves. The insert sleeves are pushed into the conduit pipe in such a way as to leave 20 mm free space at the front (at both sides).

A 20 mm thick layer of FIWA sealant is then applied at each side of the conduit. Some overfill of the sealant is needed because some sealant will be pushed between and into the empty sleeves during finishing.

To add or remove cables in a later stage some of the FIWA sealant can be removed using a hollow punch.

After the cable or cables have been installed, the openings in the sealant layer are refilled at both sides of the penetration with FIWA sealant.

To smooth the surface, a cloth that is sprayed with water is used to press down the layer of FIWA. The FIWA sealant between the cables is pressed down and smoothed with a spatula or putty knife. When smoothing is finished a last check should be taken if sufficient sealant is applied in between the cables.

CSD-RISE Adding a Cable
CSD-RISE Adding a Cable

An important feature of the RISE system is the possibility to add or remove cables in a later stage without  disassembling the whole penetration.

It's so simple. Just cut away the layer of sealant at both sides of the penetration in a tapering shape. Pull the cable through one of the empty sleeves. If the empty sleeves are not fitting to the size of the cable to be ducted, a number of insert sleeves must be removed.

Install a fitting insert sleeve in the open space and pull the cable through the fitting insert sleeve that has now been installed.

Refill the openings cut in the putty layer at both sides of the penetration with FIWA sealant. Press the sealant down firmly and smooth it with a damp cloth.

CSD-RISE Advantages
CSD-RISE Advantages

The RISE system offers many advantages.

The system offers the most simple way of installation while the very limited amount of components makes it easy to handle on site. RISE can be used both for vertical (deck) and horizontal (bulkhead) conduit openings.

The sealing system allows cables to be ducted through conduit openings in a bent, curved or oblique way. Without any adverse impact on the sealing performance.

An important feature is the possibility to add or remove cables in a later stage without disassembling the whole penetration. But there is more.

With RISE no pre-engineering is needed, no special conduit frames have to be used, there are no restrictions on cable types and sizes, insulation in front of the penetration is not needed ánd the system can be used for the shortest possible conduit length.

RISE:

  • Safe

  • Simple

  • Cost-effective rapid transit system.

CSD-RISE Applications

The RISE system is used in ship building and refitting, the offshore industry and onshore building and construction for the fire resistant and gas, smoke and water-tight sealing of

  • (Multi) Cable penetrations
  • Transit openings carrying metal and/or plastic pipes
  • Transit openings that need to be protected against electromagnetic interference as well (RISE EMC)

Thanks to the RISE extension frame the RISE system can also be used for 'upgrading' existing installations.

The RISE extension frame not only improves fire resistance but also creates a substantial improvement in ducting capacity.

Whatever the project, CSD offer the most comprehensive and cost effective range of sealing systems designed to prevent the spread of fire, fumes, smoke and gases, helping to save lives as well as buildings and equipment.

CSD-RISE FIWA Putty/Sealant
CSD-RISE FIWA Putty/Sealant

FIWA is a fire-resistant sealant based on a single component silicone compound.

FIWA is also water-repellent. High bonding strength. UV and Ozone resistant.

In the event of fire or temperatures in excess of 200 °C the sealant expands to about 10 times its original volume. During this process a porous mass is formed, which has excellent thermal insulation properties. In contrast to conventional materials that swell under severe heat exposure, the expansion of FIWA sealant is not caused by intumescence, but by chemical process (Intumescence means the occurrence of volume enlargement under the effect of heat, caused by the surface structure being inflated by fumes originating from the product). The advantage of this is that the expansion of FIWA is not accompanied by formation of large amounts of fumes.
